A Walk with Dad

This year we have included a “A Walk with Dad” – Through the Eyes of A King. The route for the walk starts at the MLK Center for Non-Violence and ends at the Butler Street YMCA. This short route was chosen to highlight to young and old in our community, the walk that a young Martin L. King, Jr. took as he walked from his birth home to the YMCA. This short, but powerful, walk displayed some of the best in Black achievement during 1930’s and 1940’s when a young Martin King walked Auburn Avenue. He was able to see religious greatness at his home church – Ebenezer Baptist, Wheat Street Baptist and Big Bethel AME Church. Along  this walk, on display, was the Masonic Lodge and the Odds Fellow Building – both built by black construction companies. In addition, there was the Carnegie Mellon Library, an array of Doctors, Lawyers, Pharmacists, Real Estate and Insurance Agents, and many other professionals that catered directly to the black community.?This help to shape Dr. King’s young mind to fight for equality of American’s Negro citizens and inspire him to become the man he was. We start where the movement ended with Dr. King, but began for others, representing us taking up the mantel of manhood in our community continuously making it a Decent Place to Live. The Board of Butler Street CDC and FCE Entertainment invite you to participate in this walk of greatness from the MLK Center to Butler Street YMCA. This is the initiative of the Butler CDC to bring back families to living and working on Auburn Avenue with affordable housing, retail shops through their property development efforts.
