Description

Founded in 1956 by Frank Wittow, the Academy Theatre is a company dedicated using theatre as a means of psychological change. Since it's founding the Academy has used an ensemble of actors to create new work and explore classic plays in a new way to leave audiences with the most through provoking experience possible. The Academy was the first integrated theater in the south, the first to use an ensemble system, and is the longest running theatre company in the southeast. The Academy has been recognized all over the country for it's contributions to advancing theatrical technique and for launching the careers of some of the most talented people in the performing arts. From noted actors such as Samuel L. Jackson to leading national arts administrators such as Maggie McEnerny (Atlanta Gay Mens Chrous), the Academy is dedicated to getting people beyond the mere audience experience to actual participation and change. The Academy has renewed its commitment to thought provoking work under the leadership of Chairman Jimmy Gough, Managing Director, Lorenne Fey, and Artistic Director Robert Drake.
