ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Writer/Director/Choreographer CJay Philip first produced her adaptation of Carmen in 2007 in Zurich Switzerland with her brother and co-choreographer, Kelvin Hardy. The more recent escalation in aggression and dating violence among teens motivated Philip to bring her Carmen back to the stage and into community as a vehicle for dialogue around the topic of conflict resolution and emotional health.
"Voices of Carmen is my attempt to create an avenue for youth voices to be heard and for communities to listen. Young people face alot of pressure, stress, fear and shamed everyday. How can we help them deal with it and know they are not alone?”
Voices of Carmen maintains the Carmen Youth Council. These are students who serve as advisors to Philip on school climate, music styles, themes and the relevance of the work.
